We need to process what we hear in order to completely listen, otherwise the sound goes in one ear and out the other. Some people don’t have the choice, even when their hearing is excellent. We hear, whether we want to or not, but we need to choose to actively listen. It is a passive activity where we don’t have to actively engage our brain to do that activity. ![]() It means interpreting different sounds, while beginning to understand social interactions. You can ask students to listen and write down all of the animals they hear mentioned, as well as the sounds they make. Hearing is the physical process that your body goes through as sound hits our ear drums. In other words, hearing is passive and involuntary, while listening is active and voluntary. Listening is different to simply hearing. Just like anything in sales, reactive isn’t going to cut it. According to Merriam-Webster, hearing is defined as “the process, function, or power of perceiving sound” and listening is defined as “to hear something with thoughtful attention”. At the most basic level you can see that listening is more defined as a reactive type of activity. Listening, at its best, is active, focused, concentrated attention for the purpose of understanding the meanings expressed by a speaker. As a result, it requires motivation and effort. Having Think, Pair, Shares during lessons and discussions is a great way to practice receiving and sharing what is heard. Listening, on the other hand, is purposeful and focused rather than accidental. We typically use “ hearing” and “ listening” interchangeably, but it’s important to know the difference. When the speaker is finished speaking, have the listener repeat one of the speaker’s main points, and offer them a compliment. It appears that the brain’s representation of meaning does not depend. Have you ever talked to someone and felt that they just weren’t getting what you were saying, even though they were nodding along and maintaining eye contact? They could be hearing what you’re saying, but they just aren’t listening. When they compared the semantic brain maps for listening and reading, the researchers found that they were almost identical. Bottom-up listening activities can help learners to understand enough linguistic elements of what they hear to then be able to use their top-down skills to fill. ![]()
